About Muna Magazine

Muna Magazine is a hybrid children’s magazine designed to help young people aged 8–15 develop practical financial literacy, entrepreneurship skills, curiosity and a stronger understanding of the world around them. The magazine combines a quarterly print edition with digital content, including stories, interviews, research-based features, visuals and video.

We are looking for a passionate and experienced volunteer Magazine Editor to coordinate the editorial development and publishing of the magazine and help build a platform that inspires children across Africa and beyond.

Location: Fully remote – anywhere in Africa

Publication: Muna Magazine

Format: Hybrid: quarterly print + digital platform

Audience: Children aged 8–16

Experience: At least 2 years in magazine/book publishing, children’s education, or a closely related field

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate the editorial planning, production and publishing of Muna Magazine’s quarterly print editions and related digital content.
  • Develop an editorial calendar and story pipeline that balance financial literacy, entrepreneurship, education, creativity, leadership and current affairs in age-appropriate formats.
  • Identify children who are running businesses, creating innovations, excelling in sports, arts, science, technology, community service or other fields, and conduct or coordinate interviews with them.
  • Research and document the childhood experiences, early interests, challenges and achievements of notable African leaders and other influential figures, turning them into inspiring, evidence-based stories for young readers.
  • Research and develop child-friendly stories about important developments affecting children in Africa and other parts of the world, including economics, society, civic life, science, culture and global affairs.
  • Write, edit and fact-check articles, interviews, profiles, features, captions and other editorial content while ensuring language and presentation are appropriate for readers aged 8–15.
  • Work with contributors, researchers, interviewees and partners to source reliable information, permissions, photographs and other editorial materials.• Coordinate with Muna’s graphic design team and Muna Animation Studio to translate stories into compelling illustrations, infographics, short videos, animations and promotional content.
  • Help shape the magazine’s editorial voice, standards and visual storytelling approach across print and digital platforms.
  • Review page proofs and digital content before publication and maintain high standards of accuracy, clarity, child safety, copyright compliance and editorial quality.
  • Contribute to audience engagement and promotion by developing or coordinating content for social media, website, newsletters and other digital channels.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • At least 2 years of professional or substantial practical experience in magazine publishing, book publishing, journalism, editorial work, children’s education, or a closely related field.
  • Strong writing, editing, proofreading and research skills.• Demonstrated ability to develop engaging stories for children or young audiences, or strong evidence of the ability to adapt complex subjects into clear, age-appropriate content.
  • Strong interviewing and storytelling skills, with the ability to build rapport with children and young people.
  • Excellent fact-checking and source-verification skills.
  • Good understanding of digital publishing and content production workflows.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with designers, animators, writers and other creative professionals.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple editorial deadlines remotely.
  • Comfort working across African countries and cultures, with sensitivity to diversity, inclusion and child safeguarding.
  • A relevant degree, diploma or equivalent professional experience in journalism, communications, publishing, education, literature, media or another related field is an advantage.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience producing children’s magazines, educational content or youth-focused media.
  • Knowledge of financial literacy, entrepreneurship education or youth development.
  • Experience with digital storytelling, newsletters, social media or multimedia content.
  • Familiarity with interviewing public figures, entrepreneurs, educators or young achievers.
  • Ability to identify emerging stories and translate them into engaging editorial concepts.
  • Experience working with remote, multicultural or pan-African teams. 

What the Volunteer Will Do

  • Set and manage the editorial direction and quarterly production schedule.
  • Build a network of young entrepreneurs, achievers, educators, experts and storytellers who can contribute to the magazine.
  • Commission, write, edit and coordinate content from contributors.
  • Conduct interviews and research across different African countries, primarily through remote methods where appropriate.
  • Coordinate editorial inputs with the graphic design and animation teams.
  • Help ensure every issue delivers useful, accurate and inspiring content for children aged 8–15.

Time Commitment
