Muna Kalati, a premier voice of children's literature in Africa, is seeking a qualified consultant to conduct research and provide expert insights on the children book industry in Nigeria. The goal is to provide a comprehensive overview and understanding of the current dynamics and developments in the children book industry in Africa. There is a scarcity of quality information on children and young adult literature from Africa. To fill that gap, Muna Kalati has undertaken a series of in-country research to generate evidence on the cultural value and economic contribution of children’s books to local development.
This call for application is opened to researchers and specialists in children literature and publishing that are resident in the country of focus. The selected consultant will be reporting to Muna Kalati research officer and the executive director.
The primary responsibilities include:
Conducting comprehensive research on the current state of children's book publishing, distribution, and consumption in Nigeria.
Identifying emerging trends, challenges, and opportunities within the children's book and publishing industry.
Assessing the representation and diversity of Nigerian authors, illustrators, and narratives in children's books.
Evaluating the accessibility, availability, and affordability of children's books in different regions and communities.
Exploring the role of children's literature in promoting literacy, cultural preservation, and economic development.
Providing recommendations and strategies to enhance the reach, impact, and quality of children's literature in Nigeria.
Create a database of children book professionals (publishers, writers, illustrators, libraries) in Nigeria.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications:
Proven expertise in children’s literature, publishing, or related fields, with a focus on the Nigerian or West African context.
Extensive research experience, with a strong understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.
Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information into actionable insights and the capacity to produce comprehensive reports and presentations.
Strong understanding of the local publishing industry, educational systems, and cultural landscapes in Nigeria.
Strong network with local publishers, writers, illustrators or book professionals in the country.
Proficiency in English is preferred. (French is an added advantage)
